UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem and Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey were recently at FOX studios as part of media duties for their respective organizations. The two fighters sat down for an interview where Rousey took the role of reporter and questioned “The Reem” on a number of topics. As most know, Overeem’s weight is a recurring subject due to his physical transformation over the years, so the most interesting revelation of the interview came when Rousey questioned the heavyweight division’s number one contender about cutting weight.
Ronda Rousey: How nice is it to never have to make weight? Or do you actually have to cut? Is there like – cause there’s a maximum right?
Alistair Overeem: Yeah, yeah, yeah I do cut. Before the Brock fight I was like 275-280. For this fight I also have to cut a little bit. I’m a little bit over 265. But yeah it’s wonderful just to just eat whatever you want, cause first I was fighting light heavy(weight), I had to cut, I was 220 and I had to drop to 215, so it was only water, salads. You know how it is, you know how it is.
Overeem weighed in at 263 pounds for his fight against Lesnar, but many people were not aware the colossal heavyweight cut down from upwards of 275 pounds. If Overeem wasn’t scary enough, the fact he is getting bigger and stronger should send a chill down opponents spines. Rousey and Overeem also battled in the UFC Undisputed 3 video game. Rousey fought as “The Super Samoan” Mark Hunt, while Overeem fights as himself.
