The whirlwind of changes on the all-heavyweight UFC 146 main card continues as the temporarily opponent-less Roy “Big Country” Nelson is now scheduled to square off with Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga.
Nelson was originally scheduled to fight Antonio Silva at the event, but after Alistair Overeem was removed from the card and Frank Mir was promoted to the main event, Silva was shifted into the co-main event against Cain Velasquez.
UFC president Dana White confirmed the match up between Nelson and Gonzaga via his personal twitter account.
Nelson (16-7) is in desperate need of a victory at UFC 146. “The Ultimate Fighter” season 10 winner is 1-3 in his last four bouts – last dropping a one-sided unanimous decision to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143. Nelson needs a win on May 26 to stay relevant in the heavyweight division.
Gonzaga (13-6) is looking to make the most of his second run in the UFC with a big win at UFC 146. After a short-lived retirement from the sport, Gonzaga returned to the octagon at UFC 142 in Brazil and picked up a quick submission victory over heavyweight prospect Ednaldo Oliveira.
With Gonzaga moving up the card, his former opponent, Shane Del Rosario, is now without an opponent for the event. Look for the UFC to announce an opponent for Del Rosario shortly.
UFC 146 will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 26. The event is headlined by a UFC heavyweight championship bout between champion Junior ”Cigano” dos Santos and challenger Frank Mir. For the latest on the UFC 146 fight card, click here.
