Gray Maynard vs. Joe Lauzon On Tap For UFC 155
Both men are coming off significant victories as Maynard defeated Clay Guida in the main event of UFC on FX 4 in June and Lauzon submitted Jamie Varner at UFC on FOX 4 earlier this month.
News of the 155-pound contest was passed along by UFC officials.
Maynard (11-1-1, 1 NC) won a frustrating split decision against Guida in a fight that saw little action take place with Maynard attempting to engage an opponent who did not want to do the same. Nevertheless, after failing to capture the UFC lightweight championship from Frankie Edgar on two occasions, Maynard picked up a much-needed win. “The Bully” will attempt to reassert himself as a top contender with a win at UFC 155.
Lauzon (22-7) is fresh off one of the defining bouts of his career against Varner at the last FOX event. On top of his third-round submission victory, “J-Lau” won $120,000 in post-fight bonus money for taking part in the “Fight of the Night” and locking in the “Submission of the Night”. Lauzon has had an up and down career in the UFC over the years but has the chance to catapult himself up the rankings with a win over a former title challenger in Maynard.
While the Dec. 29 UFC event has yet to be formally announced by the organization, a heavyweight championship bout between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez is expected to headline the event.
A location for the event is unknown at this time. However, in recent years the New Year’s weekend UFC fight card have taken place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
