Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio Silva Confirmed For UFC 146
Two days after the UFC announced a main event switch for UFC 146 that left former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in limbo, UFC president Dana White tweeted that Velasquez is now slated to face former Strikeforce heavyweight contender Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the co-feature of the May 26 event.
“Don’t believe any of the BS you read on the internet. Cain is fighting Bigfoot Silva May 26th in Vegas”
Velasquez (9-1) was last seen in the octagon was last November when he lost the UFC heavyweight championship to Junior dos Santos by first round knockout. The defeat was the first of Velasquez’s career and he is looking to redeem himself with a big victory at UFC 146.
Silva (16-3) was originally expected to face Roy Nelson at the event, but was seen by the UFC as the best choice to fill in for Mir in the co-main event. The Brazilian is coming off a first round TKO loss to Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce organization last year, and now has the opportunity to make a splash in his UFC debut with a victory over the former champion.
The UFC 146 shuffle is expected to continue in the coming days, as the organization will announce a replacement for Silva against Nelson.
UFC 146 is headlined by a UFC heavyweight championship bout between Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir and is scheduled to take place on May 26, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
